Travel Diaries: Kristin's Italian Food Series

August 11, 2017

Hello reader!

Get your tastebuds ready! Kristin is taking you on a trip around Italy! That is through pictures, ofcourse! You'll indulge your eyes in photographs of the food that she savored. It's a feast you don't want to miss!

First stop: Calabria

What better way to start your trip to Italy? Have an authentic and homemade dish! This heavenly meal was prepared by Kristin's great aunt. It is a potato pie that is filled with egg, cheese and ham. Freshly cooked in the oven, every bite will melt in your mouth and will leave you wanting more.

Now you can't go to Italy and not have a plate of spaghetti. This is a classic dish and a must have! Kristin's aunt prepared the pasta with a homemade tomato sauce using the fresh tomatoes from her garden. Now how can you get better than this?

Second stop: Naples

Breakfast in Italy and in Europe is kept very simple: coffee, juice and cookies. You wake up early (6 am) and you indulge in a small meal. Some also prefer to have fruit instead of cookies. This is what we had in Naples at a local cafe called Nero Bar del Professore. If you come here, ask for cafe con panna (coffee with cream) it is delicious!

One of the best places to have pizza is in Naples! Kristin had the classic Margerita Pizza. It was not like any other pizza she had ever tried. The dough was thin and extremely light. The tomato sauce was fresh and the cheese melted so effortlessly. To describe it is incomparable to how tasty this pizza was! Visit Naples and try the Margerita Pizza at Rossopomodoro Restaurant you will thank me!

When in Naples, treat yourself to some delicious gelato. Check out Casa Infante and ask for the Stracciatela (chocolate chip) and Nocciola (hazelnut) flavours. In fact, wherever you are in Italy, try their gelato, compare it to different cities; why not treat yourself?

Next stop: Cassino

Nothing can be compared to the homemade dishes made by the hands of Italian women. Kristin's aunt in Cassino prepared this lovely ensemble of clams and spaghetti drizzled with olive oil and lemon. Simple yet extremely delightful! Several restaurants in Italy prepare this dish, try it out!

Next stop: Rome

When in Rome, order a plate of Carbonara pasta. It's one of Rome's most classic and popular dishes! It's spaghetti smothered with egg, cream and pancetta. Definitely a savoury and rich dish!

Last stop: Venice

This may not look like the most appetizing meal but it really is an enticing dish. All over Venice, restaurants were advocating their Pasta al nero di seppia (squid ink pasta). Be careful though, this can be quite of a messy meal! Your mouth will be covered with black ink with every bite but don't worry it doesn't stain your lips or your teeth. A few sips of water or wine and you will be just fine!
